Back to Work!

Well I’m back at work! After having nearly 2 months off, I returned to work as a senior associate, and let me tell you, it was an adjustment!

Although on many of my jobs last year I was acting as a senior associate, after 2 months off, you get a little rusty! So, on Monday morning I returned to one of my clients which I have been on since I started at the firm, however, I found out that the experienced senior would be in training all week, and I would be working alone! I had a meeting scheduled with the client but had no idea what was going on because I had never worked on the internal control audit before, so naturally, I panicked!

Everyone at this client is really nice, so the meeting went well. Once I got my head wrapped around things, I calmed down, and my senior was really good at calling me whenever she could. It was strange though because sometimes I didn’t know what my role was or what was expected of me (being a new senior); that had to have been a function of being out of “work mode” for 2 months, and also returning to work at a more senior level. But the support system at PwC is amazing, and my colleagues got me through it.

However, just as Murphy’s Law would have it, by the time I started to feel more comfortable out there by myself, I got booked to do another job for the last 2 days of the week – resume screening! I was really excited because I love helping out our fantastic recruiting team, and it was the first time I had been asked to participate in this activity. So that’s where my weekend is going – Thursday through Sunday, a bunch of us are coming into the office and sorting through all the resumes that all you talented people out there prepared for us!

I actually took a break from the resume screening to write this blog, so I better get back to it! I hope everyone has a good weekend and see you next week!

Hi Nisha:

It's Harvey :) It's great to hear that although PwC does challenge you, they also ensure that you are well supported. I hope you enjoy reading some great resumes and thanks for keeping everyone updated on the recruiting process.

Hi Harvey,

No problem - I was certain that people would be interested in hearing a bit about the recruiting process!

Work certainly is a challenge at times but it is all part of the learning process. The important thing is ensuring that you have people to help and guide you along the way, as the people you work with make all the difference! Luckily I have a bunch of great people in my corner :)

Hi Nisha,

I have a question about the cover letter/resume screening process you went through. PwC must have so many applicants, and I'm sure many of them exhibit outstanding experience and grammatically error-free. So how does Pwc choose which candidates should receive interviews?

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for your question. Choosing which candidates get an interview is definitely a tough process. When screening candidates, PwC looks for students who are "well rounded" - i.e. they have good grades, have been involved in extra-curricular activities, have held leadership positions (as in a significant role in a club or organization on campus) and relevant work experience. Also, attention to detail and writing capabilities are important. Additionally, it helps to get your name out there during the information sessions and other recruiting events, as this way the screeners are more likely to remember you when they read your resume and cover letter.

Making decisions on interviews is not easy. Competition is fierce and the number of students who get interviews and ultimately jobs is limited; we can only bring so many students into the firm at one time. So for everyone out there, don't lose hope if you didn't receive an interview this time around; keep on trying and keep your chin up!
