PwC’s 2009 Gala, a celebration for co-op, summer and full time students with offers, was held at Andrew Richard Designs. Every year the Recruitment team finds a new and exciting venue for the gala, and I always think to myself “hmm, I wonder how PwC will be able to top this venue?” – well, they sure found a way this year!

PwC staff and partners can definitely look forward to PwC’s new home fast approaching in 2011. I was recently amazed at the photos I saw of the breathtaking views & construction photos, showing that the building is coming along quite nicely. Perhaps one of highlights of the new building, especially for all the hockey fans, is that our future neighbour will be the Maple Leafs! Actually, our new neighbour will be Maple Leaf Square. They are doing some building of their own near 18 York Street.

PwC announced a new program at the end of fiscal 2009 by which staff and partners can recognize their colleagues for making valuable contributions to the firm, and who deliver noteworthy results. This program is called “Acclaim.” Anyone can reward a colleague by granting them points; and in turn, the individual receiving this reward can redeem their points for gift certificates to a variety of products and gift certificates at AMC Theatres, American Apparel, the Apple Store, Canadian Tire, Alice Fazooli’s, Holt Renfrew, Danier, HMV, Panasonic, Roots, Samsung, LG, Jack Astors….just to name a few!

This week I was on a client out of town. I was on a team of 5 working near upstate New York. My favorite part of working out of town is that you get the chance to get to know your co-workers and how cool they are.

Starting a new job can be very intimidating for some people, and especially University students who have just landed their dream internship at one of the “big four” accounting firms. Familiarizing themselves with new co-workers, a new environment, and even a new lifestyle of a full time job is a big adjustment. On the contrary, my summer experience at PwC quickly erased all of the above concerns and became one of the best experiences of my life.

This past Saturday, PwC in the GTA held their annual Holiday Party. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, as I was ill (which I am STILL upset about!). However, through updates from friends and pictures on Facebook, I still think I can provide a good idea of what our GTA Holiday Party was like!

Remember what frosh was like during the first few weeks of University? Thought those days were gone? Well they’re not!! Not at PwC at least! For all the new associates who start at the firm, we put them through a little “initiation” process, and it’s called “Rookie Night”!

As some of you may know, the alternative/rock band “Weezer” was in town playing at the Air Canada Centre last week. PwC has box seats for the purpose of entertaining clients, but lucky for me, one of the partners had 3 extra tickets, and I got to go to the concert!

Well this past week was quite celebratory! Remember that job I was on for 4 weeks that I “rolled off” of – well I got a pleasant surprise even after I was done with that job!

This week I am on a new client out-of-town (luckily it’s not far from my parent’s house so I can stay there and have some home-cooked meals!). This engagement is the audit of a pension plan. I haven’t really done one before, but I’m finding it interesting and pretty straightforward! Right now, the audit test I’m doing is making sure pension payments are ceased in a timely fashion after the company is notified of the death of any pensioners. I never thought I’d be looking at death certificates on an audit!
